A short guide

The Art of Layering

A round can start at 45° and finish at 70°. The answer is three thin layers rather than one heavy one — each doing one job, each easy to take off at the turn.

Layer 1

Base layer

The polo — worn all round, every round.

When: Every round. On a warm day it’s all you need.

Layer 2

Mid layer

Warmth you can still swing in: quarter-zips, vests and knits.

When: Early tee times and autumn afternoons — roughly 50–65°F. Take it off at the turn.

Layer 3

Outer layer

Wind and rain: windshirts, shells and jackets.

When: Wind, drizzle or a cold front. Light enough to swing in, packable enough to stuff in the bag.
